T-2: Inspiration

Anne at ainsobriety inspired me today, to come up with a word of the year for 2018. She has apparently been doing this for several years now and I think it’s an awesome idea. 2017 was a dark year for me in many ways, so I love the idea of a fresh start. I also love the idea of framing the year in advance. “No matter what happens, my year is going to be about this.” Now to decide what “this” is…

So I went in search of more inspiration and found so many ideas that I love.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover. —Mark Twain

Do more. Be active. Try things. Get up off the couch and live life.

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any. —Alice Walker

It’s my life to design.

If you hear a voice within you say “you cannot paint,” then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced. —Vincent Van Gogh

Yes! This is how to quiet The Voice. Find enjoyment and happiness in sobriety.

Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. —Dalai Lama

Is it possible that life without alcohol could actually be better? That would be wonderful.

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. —Ralph Waldo Emerson

Yes! I have the power to decide.

You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. —Maya Angelou

Creativity brings me joy and there is no creativity after a bottle of wine.

I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear. —Rosa Parks

Love this. Decide and move on. Less ruminating and more action.

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. —Leonardo da Vinci

I have long been living too passively. I need to do.

All of this leads me to look for a word that encompasses the idea that I need to take steps to create a new way of being. It’s not only about my thinking but also my doing. It’s not only about not drinking but also about what to do instead. What should my word be? Action? Doing? Create? Instead? Build? I can’t seem to find it. Any suggestions?

  1. After reading all that, nodding all the way, I think you have your word on one of your last sentences.

It might be simple, but it is the key to serious change.
We do. Think, plan, wish and hope forever.

If we want things to change we must DO.

Sobriety might require you to do things you don’t expect. Hard things, scary things, and fun things.

Being willing to do is powerful indeed.

    Give it some thought….

  2. Such a lovely post.
Thanks for sharing so many beautiful and inspiring words.
I know you will feel it in your heart when the best possible word arrives for you.

  3. I’ve been thinking about this post for a couple of days. The Mark Twain quote really resonated with me for many reasons. Mostly because we tend to get in a rut and not live our lives to the fullest. Obviously drinking does not do us any favors. I wish you well. Let us know what you decide. Bring on 2018! I’m going for it!
