Day 64: Let’s talk about sleep.

Recently I’ve started waking up before my alarm. And getting out of bed. And not going back to sleep for the entire day. What? Yes, it’s true.

This is momentous for me. When I was drinking, my sleep schedule went like this:

Drink. Go to bed and “fall asleep” immediately. Wake in the middle of the night to pee, drink a bunch of water and see how much of the evening I could remember. Then lie awake for at least an hour, sometimes longer. Finally fall  back asleep and then later wake miserably to alarm. Drag self out of bed to take daughter to school. Come home and  sleep another hour. Wake to second alarm. Drink tons of coffee and go to work.

I do not miss any of that.

Now I go to bed earlier than I used to (no more hiding out by myself with wine) and fall asleep naturally (and pretty quickly). If I wake in the middle of the night, I go right back to sleep. I never do that insomniac thing anymore. When I get up in the morning, I’m up for the day. I still drink quite a bit of coffee, but I don’t need it in the same that I did before.

And now I don’t even seem to need my alarm.

Amazing.

  1. Holy Cow do I ever remember those nights. And the wonky days which followed. What a gift and a relief to have left that all behind.
    Solid, deep, refreshing sleeps are the BEST! And waking ready in mind, body, and spirit for a new day.
